Support Groups

GRCCAC provides multiple opportunities for survivors of sexual assault and child abuse to receive support. All support groups are free to the public and are facilitated by a licensed professional specially trained to deal with issues of sexual assault and child abuse.

These support groups include:

  • PIER: A support group for children ages 6-11 who have experienced sexual abuse. The groups are structured to help the children identify and explore feelings they may have in regards to their abuse. It also enables them to develop social and coping skills and empowers them to move beyond the trauma of child abuse to a more normal life.
  • Adolescent Girls' Group: A support group for girls ages 12-17 who have experienced sexual abuse or assault. The open discussion sessions allow the adolescent girls to talk about their experiences, develop positive coping skills, explore the impact of their experiences and what they need to do to recover and enjoy their teen years.
  • Adult Women’s Support Group: Facilitated by GRCCAC’s adult therapist, this group is for adult female survivors of sexual assault and childhood abuse. The groups are designed to help the survivors break the silence about their experiences, develop positive coping skills, explore other resources available to them in their recovery process and increase their ability to return to a fully-functioning life.
  • Adult Men’s Support Group: Unique to the state, this group is designed to provide support to male survivors of sexual assault and childhood abuse. The group is facilitated by a male mental health professional and is designed to minimize the shame and trauma the participants may feel in regards to their experiences.
  • Parenting Support Groups: Facilitated by specially-trained parent educators, these groups are structured around the Parents Anonymous model and offer peer-to-peer support for parents and caregivers. These groups are highlighted by open discussions on specific issues of child raising and to offer suggestions on how to build a positive relationship with the children.
  • Non-offending Caregivers Support Group: Specifically designed to provide resources and support to individuals raising a child who has been abused, these groups are facilitated by GRCCAC’s family advocate. The group discussions explore the topics of how to be supportive of your child throughout the investigation and prosecution of the alleged abuser, offers information on additional resources that may be needed by the family, and provides emotional support for the many issues the family may face as they return to a normal homelife.
